75 pairs of previously-worn panties that ‘don’t belong’ spur investigation at U of C residence

CALGARY – Police are investigating reports that stolen bras and panties were found in a residence shared by three women at the University of Calgary.

The incident dates back to Jan. 9, when one woman returned from Christmas break and found several bras in her underwear drawer that didn’t belong to her, say police.

Her roommate returned Jan. 11, and found “several bras and approximately 75 pairs of previously-worn panties” in her bedroom drawer.

Police accompanied the third roommate Jan. 14, when more undergarments were found. More women’s underwear and a pair of men’s boxer shorts were found in a laundry basket four days later. The boxers have since been sent for DNA analysis.

“Some of the underwear recovered is believed to have been stolen from the three victims in 2014,” said Calgary Police spokesperson Michael Nunn in an email. “However, most of the underwear is unaccounted for.”

Campus security and university officials are working with police as the investigation continues.

“All  the buildings here are locked up 24/7,” said Brian Sembo, director of security at the university. “They can’t be entered by anyone without a key. It’s an electronic system and that particular building, there’s also locks on the residence as well as the individual bedrooms.

“In this case, we’ve added—as an interim measure—some additional thumb locks that are going onto the doors so that nobody can get in.”

Anyone with information or who has had underwear stolen are asked to contact police.
