Saskatchewan man nearly impaled by plywood on Highway 3

Watch above: A Saskatchewan man who was almost killed after plywood came through his windshield says reaching for his morning drink probably saved his life.

SASKATOON – “The shards of glass and wood that came at my face, originally I thought that the next time I looked in the mirror I wasn’t going to have any skin left.”

Jonny Gibson was driving on Highway 3 just outside of Prince Albert when a piece of plywood smashed through his windshield in what could have been a deadly collision. Luckily for him, he was reaching down for his drink, otherwise he may not be alive today.

“I was leaned over to grab my Tim Hortons apple cider out of the cup holder of my door. When I did that I heard a crash, and I felt glass and wood come at my face. And the next thing I knew there was a huge piece of plywood sticking through my windshield. If I sat up it would have scraped my neck. ”

“I didn’t see anything coming. I heard it and I felt it, but I didn’t see anything coming whatsoever.”

The plywood came from the back of a pick-up truck heading in the opposite direction along the highway. Gibson hopes that the driver, who didn’t stop at the time, wasn’t aware that it had happened and will now come forward.

“My faith in humanity says that they had no idea that anything flew out of their truck. I’m hoping that’s the case.”

According to Saskatchewan Government Insurance on average 32 people a year are convicted of having insecure loads in their vehicle. Gibson reminds us of the importance of tying down their vehicle’s cargo.

“The extra 10 minutes could save somebody’s life.”
