KELOWNA – He’s a cat with quite the tale. Clancy the cat is on the road to recovery in his new home after being found barely alive in the Yukon.
Clancy was originally found on the streets of Penticton and after being nurtured back to health was adopted out. However, while on a road trip in the Yukon with his previous owner, Clancy escaped and endured half a year in the wild of the Great White North. He was miraculously found next to a motel, barely alive. He was turned over to the Dawson City Humane Society which tracked him back to Penticton thanks to a microchip.
“There were witness reports seeing him fending off foxes and going through garbage, “ says December Van Den Berg from AlleyCATS Alliance Society. “He has frost bite in his toes, we think he has snow blindness, his ears are all chewed up.”
His story has touched many people including an iconic Canadian band, the Irish Rovers. The band heard about Clancy’s story and wanted to get involved. Not only does the cat have an Irish name but the band says it has even more in common with the orange tabby.
“This cat had been on the road for hundreds of miles and we thought that feels like us. We are the same we’ve done that too so that’s when we thought let’s see if we can do something for Clancy,” says the band’s frontman George Millar.
With their 50th anniversary tour coming through the Okanagan, the band had a chance to meet Clancy for the first time Wednesday afternoon. The musicians made it possible for Penticton resident Jodi French to adopt Clancy by paying the $150 fee and supplying the cat with food for the next little while. Something French’s limited income would not allow.
“I’d have to let him go, and I don’t know if I could do that but I would have had to,” says French.
The Irish Rovers are performing at the Kelowna Community Theatre Thursday evening. Autographed postcards will be sold at the concert with the proceeds going to the AlleyCATS Alliance Society of Penticton. Clancy was in the society’s care before being adopted out.
