VANCOUVER – A 15-year-old girl has been found alive and well after spending the night in the bush near the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort at Bedwell Sound.
Leanne John was last seen with a school group in the area before dark on Tuesday.
“A group of our children, some of our high school students, had gone out for a trip with their chaperones,” says Ahousaht Chief Greg Louie.
“They were on a hike, they had returned, once they had returned, they had noticed the young girl Leanne was no longer with the group.”
A search was immediately launched.
Louie says after the group did not find her, they reached out to the Ahousaht RCMP, Ahousaht Search and Rescue, Tofino RCMP, and the Coast Guard. Boat owners and community members also joined the search.
In addition, a helicopter from 19 Wing Comox flew above the area to look for any sign of Leanne.
“No luck, I was told that the forest was just too dense, I guess for their technology, their infrared’s to penetrate through the trees and forests,” says Louie.
No photo of Leanne was released.
“We’re very pleased to say that she’s been located and preliminary information is that she is in pretty good condition, all things considered,” says detachment commander Sergeant Blaine Mumford.
“Considering that she was not dressed for, or prepared for an overnight stay in woods, this is just fantastic news for all those who were searching for her, or who were deeply concerned about her welfare.”
