New bill could force Alberta developers to clean up abandoned construction sites

CALGARY – Construction eyesores across the province could soon be forced to clean up their act.

A new private members bill will will give local government more power to force developers to clean up incomplete projects. Bill 205 received a second reading at the Alberta Legislature on Tuesday.

It’s good news for a southwest Calgary neighbourhood which has been dealing with a derelict construction project along 4th Street and 20th Avenue S.W. for 10 years.

Strategic Holdings, which owns the site in Cliff Bungalow, is beginning to build on the location and will erect a six storey commercial and retail development by 2013.

The site was the inspiration behind Bill 205 which is expected to become last in the New Year.
