WINNIPEG — Hundreds of Winnipeggers hoped to pick up more than groceries at the Safeway in Osborne Village on Tuesday, when the store hosted its first singles night in 30 years.
Customers indicated they were single and willing to meet new people by tying a bag to their shopping carts.
The packed store of minglers started as an event on Facebook and had more than 1,000 confirmed guests. Safeway agreed to host it after it started to gain traction. The event brought in single Winnipeggers of all ages and some said it made approaching people a little easier.
“It’s a natural meeting place for people. It’s kind of a modern-day town square,” said John Graham with Safeway. “A lot of people visit friends and neighbours when they’re shopping anyways.”
Many of the attendees said even though it started with social media buzz, they were there for the face-to-face interaction.
“I need to have that moment where I get that intuition if there is a spark there,” said one attendee. “I can’t get into Tinder or OkayCupid.”
