Secure camera registry a success

LETHBRIDGE- It was just over a month ago the Lethbridge Regional Police Service launched its secure-cam registry.  It’s a free service that helps police track commercial and residential surveillance cameras. Cst. Kara Hagen says several businesses are already on board, and residential areas are also signing up.

“We are very excited to see how many residents have logged on and signed up, but we still encourage businesses and other companies to log on as well.”

Since the registry was launched, there has been a rash of armed robberies in Lethbridge, prompting even more businesses to sign up.  It’s already proven to be worth the screen time.

“After some of those situations that occurred we have had members come to us and say hey, do you have any cameras registered in this area or that area, and we are very helpful when we can say yes we do, it helps the investigators, it helps the community, it helps solve crime.”

The Downtown Merle Norman just discovered about the program and says they will be signing up. Lash Technician Amy Marasco says anything the store can do to improve safety is a step in the right direction.

“Anything we can do to help reduce crime and break-ins in the city, we will do what we can. I think it’s a great program and we can sort of watch out for each other.”

The program is free and only takes about five minutes to sign up, a small step that could make a huge deference in an investigation.

“Our biggest focus is of course the ones outside but ones that are inside and shoot outside. A lot of cameras shoot outside and they see the parking lot, the road way and the sidewalk, we encourage anyone with an indoor camera, facing out to please register.”
