CALGARY – Three cougars have been destroyed in the Sundre area over the past two weeks, in a year in which twice as many of the cats have had to be killed by wildlife officers.

Fish and wildlife officers used a contract houndsman and his dogs to chase a cougar up a tree on Sunday at an acreage southeast of the town.

The cougar had tried to kill a domestic dog on the steps of the home, and was shot as a result.

Two other cats were shot by landowners, one under a deck and the other in a yard where it was chasing the owner’s dog.

All three were small and underweight.

Large litters of young cougars born in the area recently have been hungry and causing problems for residents. Officials say last year’s harsh winter last year led to a shortage of deer for the cougars to eat.
