TORONTO — If you’re into zombies and have some extra cash to spare, this real estate deal could be a no-brainer. Up for grabs: the City of Grantville, Georgia, which was once the backdrop for the cult classic show The Walking Dead.
It’s priced to sell on eBay with an asking price of $680,000 — to put that price into perspective, that’s a whole town for about the average price of a house in Vancouver.
“It is dirt cheap. It’s a bargain,” admits former mayor and current owner of the “3,400 square-foot property,” Jim Sells.
The sleepy town of 3,500 residents seems to be a big draw not only for tourists, but also the entertainment industry. According to Sells, Vince Vaughn just shot Term Life there last summer and four other flicks are scheduled to be filmed in Grantville this spring: In Dubious Battle with Bryan Cranston, Mena with Tom Cruise, 83 Days with Danny Glover, and The Ring 3.
“The movies love us,” Sells boasts.
In fact, he adds that one of the potential buyers is a Florida film school. Countless others have reportedly expressed interest since the ad was posted on Friday.
“We can’t count ’em. We have three people in the office…and we can’t keep up. I can’t count. It’s non-stop.”
But before you book your ticket to Georgia, be forewarned: Sells is a little selective. He scooped up the town himself when it went into foreclosure during the recession. Once filled with construction workers, much of the downtown buildings cleared out — something he hopes the new owner can turn around.
“We’re looking for the guy on the white horse…When Walt Disney showed up, middle Florida was just swampland. He had vision and he created something wonderful.”
