Highway 6 closed for another three weeks

NEAR FAUQUIER — Officials are sounding optimistic that vehicles could resume using Highway 6 three weeks from now.

The highway closed to traffic in February when a giant crack appeared, roughly one kilometre west of the Needles Ferry.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Government officials say the crack was the result of sloughing or moving ground.

The Ministry of Transportation says the earth at the site of the incident appears to be stabilizing and that it’s looking at how to rebuild the highway.

It says the highway could be re-opened to traffic by March 21.

Vehicles have been using a local forestry road as a detour.
