WATCH: The families attended the court appearance of Garry Handlen

The man charged in connection with the murders of two young girls from the 1970s is due to appear in an Abbotsford courtroom today.

Garry Handlen is expected to appear via video link to fix his next court date.

Handlen is accused of the first degree murder in the deaths of Kathryn-Mary Herbert and Monica Jack.

He was charged back in December after getting apprehended in Surrey. At the time, investigators have not revealed any details about the evidence leading to the arrest or a possible motive.

Handlen’s previous criminal history includes rape and assault convictions.

Police say Handlen travelled extensively through B.C. and Alberta at the time and released his photograph from that era, asking the public to come forward with tips if it jogs any memories.

The cold cases date back almost forty years. Monica Jack was last seen riding her bike on May 6, 1978 near Nicola Lake. Her body was found in June 1995, north of Merritt.

Kathryn-Mary Herbert disappeared in 1975 while heading to her Abbotsford home. A few months later her body was found on Matsqui First Nations property.

The families of the girls say they plan to be in court today. More than two dozen family members showed up at Handlen’s last court appearance in December.
