WATCH ABOVE: The Tuesday, March 3, 2015 weather forecast for Toronto, Ontario and the surrounding area.
TORONTO – Parts of Southern Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area, are under a special weather statement due to a mixed winter weather system moving its way into the region Tuesday afternoon.
Environment Canada says a low pressure system developing over the American plains will track towards the region bringing with it snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain.
In Toronto, snow will begin early afternoon mixed with ice pellets in the evening and an estimated accumulation between 5 to 10 centimetres.
There is also a risk of freezing rain overnight.
“We have about 200 salt trucks ready to go and once the snow arrives, we’ll activate them,” said Trevor Tenn of Toronto Transportation Services.
“It takes about two to three hours to do one round of salting on the arterial roads. We anticipate doing several rounds prior to the rush hour this afternoon.”
The City of Toronto has issued a warning to motorists to consider taking public transit today due to the weather conditions.
A freezing rain warning is also in effect for southwestern Ontario, including Peel and Halton Region, City of Hamilton and Niagara.
As for the winter weather system, towards the Niagara Peninsula, snow or ice pellets will transition through a period of freezing rain before temperatures rise above zero and change to rain.
Areas east of Southern Lake Huron to regions north of Lake Ontario including the Greater Toronto Area will see predominantly snow, however, it could be mixed with ice pellets and freezing rain at times.
General snowfall amounts in the 5 to 10 cm range will be possible with lower amounts in areas that receive more ice pellets or freezing rain.
