WINNIPEG – Spring is in the air in Manitoba.
Starting March with minus single digit temperatures is a stark contrast to last year when Environment Canada recorded a high of -26C in Winnipeg on the first day of March during a historically cold winter.
“Temperatures go up very quickly right now… by the end of the month a normal is plus five,” said meteorologist Jay Anderson.
The first day of spring is 20 days away and outdoor enthusiasts are making the most of the melting snow.
“There hasn’t been a lot of snow for snow mobiling, so ice fishing’s really kind of been the game this winter,” said Spencer Dufresne, who spent Sunday ice fishing at FortWhyte Alive.
“This time of year is actually really enjoyable to get out because you can actually enjoy the weather it’s not -30 no more so I can actually stay out all day,” said kiteboarder Mark Koenig.
And meteorologists say warmer days will continue after a short cold front moves through in the next few days.
“Tuesday’s the coldest but I think by the weekend into early next week we should be in normal to above normal temperatures,” said Anderson.
Finally, winter is on its way out.
