ABOVE: The designer of “the dress” settles the debate once and for all
TORONTO — The woman who sparked a worldwide debate on the colour of a dress has a message for everyone looking at the photo she posted on Tumblr.
“I’d like to say ‘I’m sorry’ to half the world and I’d like to say ‘have a good time arguing with your family’ to the rest of the world,” said Caitlin McNeill on Friday.
McNeill, a 21-year-old musician who lives on the Scottish island of Colonsay, broke the Internet when she posted a photo on the Tumblr dedicated to talent manager Sarah Weichel and asked “is this dress white and gold, or blue and black?”
She said she is stunned by the reaction.
“It was absolutely insane. I still feel like I’m in a bit of a dream,” she said in an interview with The Roz and Mocha Show on Toronto’s KiSS 92.5.
“It’s crazy seeing all the tweets and posts and everything that’s rolling in.”
McNeill said she is doing her best to follow the raging debate over the colour of the dress using hashtags #TheDress and #TheDressWhiteAndGold.
“I managed to keep tabs on it for a couple of hours when it first started going a bit crazy but after that I just completely lost track,” she said, “so I just keep checking every now and again and seeing if we’re still trending.”
McNeill isn’t sure why people are seeing different colours. “There’s been some fairly ridiculous explanations on Twitter but none of them seem entirely based in fact yet,” she said.
“I’m still waiting for one to convince me.”
McNeill explained the dress was worn by Celica Bleasdale, the mother of the bride, at the wedding of her friends Grace and Keir Johnston. “It’s a beautiful dress and it was very lovely on the mother of the bride.”
“The mother of the bride took the picture and sent it to the bride and then the bride showed it to her fiancé and they couldn’t agree on what colour it was,” she said, “and that’s kind of where it all started.”
What colours do McNeill see?
“I see white and gold in that picture,” she said, “but I was there at the wedding and it’s blue and black.
“Who knows?”
