Police monitoring NSCC Akerley campus after threatening phone call

HALIFAX- There will be an increased presence of police officers at the Akerley campus of the Nova Scotia Community College Friday, one day after a lockdown as a result of a threatening phone call.

Just after 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, NSCC said it received a call threatening to harm students on campus.

Halifax Regional Police and RCMP swarmed the campus, sweeping buildings for suspects and threats. The campus was evacuated, individuals searched and their vehicles checked before they left the area.

NSCC was put on lockdown as a result of the investigation, which was lifted about five hours later when police declared that no threats were found.

Sgt. Rob Lowther with Halifax Regional Police said the next step in the investigation is determining who made the call, where it originated from and the legitimacy of the threat.

But Lowther said police are confident the campus is safe for students to return to on Friday.

The threat comes amid heightened nerves two weeks after an alleged mass murder plot at the Halifax Shopping Centre was foiled by police.
