WINNIPEG – As Manitobans grit their teeth and hope spring is just around the corner, February is going out like a polar bear. Southern Manitoba is under an extreme cold warning Thursday morning.
North winds of 15 to 20 kilometres per hour combined with temperatures near -30 C are causing wind chill values near -40, Environment Canada warns.
Conditions are expected to improve during the day as temperatures rise.

The extreme cold warning is in effect for:
- Winnipeg
- Brandon, Carberry, Treherne
- Steinbach, St. Adolphe, Dominion City, Vita, Richer
- Portage la Prairie, Headlingley, Brunkild, Carman
- Morden, Winkler, Altona, Emerson, Morris
- Selkirk, Gimli, Stonewall, Woodlands, Eriksdale
- Virden, Souris
- Dugald, Beausejour, Grand Beach
- Killarney, Pilot Mound, Manitou
- Melita, Boissevain, Turtle Mountain Provincial Park
The temperature is forecast to rise to -15 C Thursday in Winnipeg, and the overnight low will drop to -27 C. The high for Friday and Saturday is forecast to hit -11 C, while Sunday is expected to reach -6 C, the normal temperature in Winnipeg for this time of year.
Northern Manitoba will be warmer than the south Thursday, with the high in Lynn Lake forecast to hit -11 C.
