City council in Greenwood accused of libeling former municipal councillor

GREENWOOD – A former Greenwood city councillor is suing the former mayor and council for alleged libel.

Barry Noll claims a press release issued by the city in March 2014 defamed himself and his family name.

That release gave the then council’s explanation for voting in-camera to remove Noll from his duties as the city’s regional district representative.

Among other allegations, Noll was accused of several breaches of confidentiality including releasing a document to a member of the public without authorization. It was also claimed Noll violated his oath of office.

“The City of Greenwood is appalled that we had to take such punitive action against a fellow councillor. This council will not be hindered by Councillor Noll or his attorney in fulfilling our roles as duly elected officials,” stated the press release.

He also wants reimbursement of all stipend money received by his replacement to the regional district board for the 2014 term.
