WINNIPEG — The son of a Manitoba politician has been found not criminally responsible for a 2012 bank robbery.

Doctors told the court Gordon Mackintosh Jr. was living with anxiety and depression and was experiencing side effects from his medication the day he walked into an Assiniboine Credit Union on Mcphillips St. and demanded cash.

Mackintosh is the son of Conservation Minister, Gord Mackintosh.

In April 2012 he slipped a note to the teller indicating there was a bomb in his briefcase.  She gave him 100 dollars cash, and he fled.

Mackintosh’s lawyer, Josh Weinstein, says it was Mackintosh’s mom who noticed her son’s photo in the paper.  It was a screen grab taken from a bank security camera and when they realized it was Mackintosh, the family called police.

“They are relieved this part is over,” said Weinstein. “Knowing why this happened and understanding that it was out of his control.”

Weinstein says doctors concluded at the time of the robbery Mackintosh was being treated for depression and an adjustment to his medication lead to impulse control issues and bouts of delerium.

There have been no incidents since.
