Winter weary Monctonians take the weather in stride

MONCTON- Moncton residents say they’re trying their best to get through a winter marked with large storms and extreme cold weather.

Cheryl Doucet lives downtown and has had a tough time shoveling out her driveway after all the big storms.

“It’s hard because the last storm we had, I shoveled all that by hand with this little square shovel so it’s pretty tough going,” she said.

On Main, people bundled up to deal with Tuesday’s frigid temperatures. Rebecca Beukeveld was one of them. She says it’s hard walking outside in such freezing temperatures.

“Its really cold today,” she said. “I want summer.”

More snow is expected this week. With snowbanks already spilling into streets, she wonders where it will all go.

“Where else are we supposed to put it,” she said. “The snow banks are already as high as they are.”

Others, however, found time to play in the cold. Ryan Purdy shot pucks at a net in an ice rink at Centennial Park.

“Skating around is not bad once you get used to it and get warmed up,” he said. “But other than that, staying still is pretty chilly.”

On Main Street, Craig Appleyard was dressed in a tuque and warm jacket. He says he can live with the weather.

“It’s just a typical New Brunswick winter and you’ve got to embrace it and put up with it, and it’ll eventually go,” he said, noting a trip down South is also a good way to deal with the cold.

Appleyard and his family are heading to Florida in about a month.

“It’s going to be nice to get away and the kids need a break from this too because they’ve been awful awful cold.”
