Multiple Boston transit cameras captured the shocking accident that sent a man’s truck sailing off the upper deck of Interstate-93 and crashing to the road below – barely avoiding landing on top of another car.

It started when Vannak Sao’s truck slammed into what’s called an impact attenuator, those devices sometimes used on highway off-ramps to negate the force of accidental impacts.

For whatever reason, be it the massive buildup of snow against the barrier or the speed of Sao’s truck, the attenuator didn’t halt the impact of the crash.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Instead, Sao’s pickup truck went flying off the interstate’s upper deck. Multiple Boston transit cameras captured what happened next, as the truck smashed through a light pole, and exit sign, and several lengths of chain link fence before finally landing on the lower deck – and barely avoided landing on another car.

The 33-year-old Boston man admitted he had been drinking Sunday morning prior to getting behind the wheel of his pickup truck and driving down Interstate-93.

“It was a mixture of drinking and being tired,” Sao told CBS News in Boston. “I just remember kind of falling asleep and I remember hitting the snowbank and kind of rattling a little bit.”

Luckily for Sao, the incredible crash left him with only a fractured nose and a swollen eye. He’s been charged with operating under the influence of liquor and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

“I have to accept the consequences of my actions,” he said, calling the crash “irresponsible” on his part.

No one else was injured as a result of the accident.
