WATCH: Family security camera catches car prowlers in Calgary

CALGARY – A Calgary family wants to remind people to lock vehicle doors after a series of car break-ins in the Hidden Valley neighbourhood.

Marla Bondy said her sister’s family set up a video camera at night after multiple vandalism incidents on Hidden Ranch Crescent.

Last Saturday, the security camera caught six men approaching the family car and opening the doors. Some climb in and others try to open the trunk.

“A couple of times they slashed the seat, and my niece’s convertible top was smashed-they put a hole through that,” said Bondy. “They take the spare change and sunglasses, things like that, anything they can.”

Bondy said her nephew’s car and neighbour’s truck were both targeted, since they had forgotten to lock their doors that night.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Although you can’t see their faces on camera, maybe it would be enough to scare them should they know people are filming and putting it on the news,” wrote Bondy in an email to Global. “Also it would be nice to remind people how important it is to remember to always lock your vehicle doors.”

Security Depot’s Duncan Scoular said it’s important to regularly check any video recordings, and pass that information along to the police.

“Maybe there’s a car constantly coming by with three or four people in it at a certain time of the day or night, slowly passing and you have to monitor for that,” said Scoular. “Based on that information, you can assist the police.”

Bondy said she’s been living in the community for 17 years, and knows a lot of her neighbours.

“And no matter who we talk to, it’s all happening to them. They forget to lock the car door, and they’re broken into.”
