Frigid winter weather breaks temperature record for Feb. 23

TORONTO – Today is the coldest Feb. 23 in Toronto’s recorded history.

Environment Canada’s website reported the temperature sat at approximately – 21 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, with the wind chill making it feel closer to -35 degrees Celsius.

The coldest Feb. 23 before today was in 1972.

There is an extreme cold weather warning in effect in Toronto, and people planning to be outdoors are advised to dress appropriately. Exposed skin can freeze in as little as 10 minutes.

The warning opens up additional shelter spaces and services for vulnerable and homeless people.

February also has the potential to be the first month since 1978 without a single day above freezing.
