Winnipeg boy delivers hundreds of coffee cans to local shelter

WINNIPEG — Brady McQueen, 10, dropped off 157 cans of coffee, plus tea, hot chocolate, sugar, Coffeemate and cups at the Main Street Project Sunday afternoon.

Brady collected tins of coffee to deliver to the homeless shelter by his birthday on Feb. 10.

“When I was seven, we had this discussion about people who didn’t have homes, and then I decided to do it,” Brady said Sunday.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

With the creation of a Facebook page called “Cups of Warmth,” donations from other Winnipeggers helped Brady build his coffee collection to the 157 tins he dropped off Sunday.

“It makes me feel like I’m helping a lot,” Brady said.

In the coming days, even more coffee cans will be delivered as he wasn’t able to gather all of the donated tins by Sunday.

“It was a neat interaction with Brady at the back door when he was coming up through the ramp and meeting people that he was giving the coffee to, and they were shaking his hand. You know, it was like he was just talking to someone in a mall and that person was saying thank you,” shelter executive director Lisa Goss said.

“There was a level of respect for what he’s doing from the community that uses our services.”

Brady isn’t done helping Winnipeg’s homeless community. Once the weather warms up, he will collect bottles of water to hand over to Main Street Project.
