Eagle Ridge United Church has received so many donations for those displaced by a condo fire in Coquitlam this week that they’ve had to move everything to a separate location.

“An amazing response from an amazing community,” says Dave Anderson. “We have everything here that folks might need in the aftermath of a fire”

There are over 30,000 pounds of donated items at the new location at 2552 Barnet Highway, including plenty of hygiene products, baby toys and household supplies.

“It has been absolutely amazing. We have had people just calling non-stop, asking what can we do, what [they] can bring, what do they need,” he said.

Over 100 people were displaced as a result of the fire last Monday at 2915 Glen Drive. Three units have been completely destroyed, but dozens more have heavy smoke damage. It’s believed the entire building will be displaced for several months.

Anderson says the biggest need now is financial donations.

“We’ve got quite a bit of stuff, but cash is what we’re going to be needing in the short-term as people deal with damage deposits and incidental expenses. These folks are starting over, many of them. Some lost everything,” he said.

In addition to going to Eagle Ridge United Church, donations can be made at any Coast Capital Savings under the name “Coquitlam Fire Victims”. A website has also been set up to facilitate help, which you can view here. Anderson says the community will make sure everyone is taken care of.

“We’re going to hunker down and support these folks in any way we can.”
