WATCH: U.S. ambassador to Canada visits Montreal
MONTREAL — The U.S. ambassador to Canada, Bruce Heyman and his wife Vicky, were in Montreal this week.
They have been in the city doing work with the U.S. Consulate, as well as cultural outreach and business meetings.
A day in the life of an ambassador
Heyman has been busy managing and fostering the relationships between Canadians and Americans.
“This is our largest trading partner, our best friend, our ally, we share a 550,000-mile border, we have seven consulates in Canada” he said.
He added that there is lots that’s there from trade, to energy and the environment, to cultural work and cultural diplomacy.

On fighting extremism
“There is no one right way,” he said.
“We can’t just beat this violent extremism through military action, we need to work on foreign fighters,” he said.
“So many foreign fighters are now going to that region, and we need to stem the flow of foreign fighters and cut finances.”
Heyman said Canada and the U.S. need to work on the de-radicalization of their own populations and ask what’s causing so many young people to sign up for this around the world.
Smitten with Montreal
The couple has been charmed by Montreal and they both said they will be making many more trips in the future.
“It’s just divine we love the multicultural nature of the city in both languages…it’s wonderful,” said Vicky Heyman.
They said they enjoyed a Valentines’ Day supper at the popular Montreal restaurant “Milos.”
