WATCH: Sloughing closes highway and damages golf course

Update 6:30 pm: Drive BC is now listing an official detour around the Highway Six closure. Drivers are able to use the Barnes Creek Forest Service Road. The highway remains closed in both directions.

NEAR EDGEWOOD – Damage done to Highway Six west of the Needles Ferry was clearly visible Wednesday. Significant cracks in the road and broken pavement caused by sloughing could be seen. Officials first closed only one lane but after conditions deteriorated, the whole road was closed in both directions around 5:30 am.

While there was no official detour, traffic was getting around the closure on a nearby forestry road but cars entered at their own risk. Late Wednesday afternoon the Ministry of Transportation said they were working to open an official detour route to single lane alternating traffic.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the ferry the community of Fauquier has also seen sloughing at the local golf course

“It is devastation,” says resident Annette Devlin. “For a small community to have such a nice little golf course… but I suppose some of it can be repaired.”

The vice-president of the Fauquier and District Golf Club hopes to open seven or eight of the holes on their typical spring opening date. However, the damage means the future remains uncertain for the golf course.
