World’s Longest Hockey Game: By the Stats

WATCH ABOVE: 250 hours, 10 gruelling days, 40 players and 1,200 smokies. Lisa Wolansky takes a look at the stats that make the World’s Longest Hockey Game great.

EDMONTON — It took 250 hours, 10 gruelling days and 40 extremely committed players, but now the book is closed on the World’s Longest Hockey Game.

The game – held at Saiker’s Acres in Strathcona County – raised money for Alberta Cancer Foundation and surpassed the Guinness World Record of 246 hours of consecutive hockey at 2 p.m. Monday.

“Physically, guys are nursing their injuries a little bit,” said player Ryan McInnis Tuesday morning. “You’re dealing with sore feet, and blisters and bruises and stuff like that.”

The game raised $1.1 million. The players stayed on the ice until 6 p.m. to reach 250 hours. Guinness will review camera footage and documents before determining whether the record will be made official.

“Everybody cleared out pretty quick,” said organizer Brent Saik. “We were able to have a quick beer, tell a few stories and say thanks and give a few hugs last night. It was an awesome, awesome ending.”

“The game wouldn’t be what it is without the volunteers getting everything going for us,” said player Scott Littlefair.

The number of hours it took to play the game isn’t the only impressive statistic.

Each player skated about 4,200 minutes, which is the equivalent to two NHL seasons. More than 1,200 smokies, 1,000 hot dogs, and 2,000 cups of coffee were bought, with $17,000 being donated back to the cause.

“We drank almost two full pallets of water plus I think 50 jugs of water,” said Saik.
