MONTREAL — A broken water main in the Montreal borough of Lachine led to heavy flooding and headaches for city workers and residents early Tuesday.

The incident took place on Provost Street, between 5th and 8th Avenues.

City crews were at the scene at 4:00 a.m., working to put a stop to the water flow. Firefighters opened up manholes and were pumping out water.

Firefighters remained at the site to help residents chip out vehicles that had become stuck in the ice due to the intense cold.

Lachine officials said that fluctuating freezing and thawing temperatures were responsible for the broken pipe.
