TORONTO – Lisa MacLeod announced Tuesday that she won’t be running for John Baird’s vacated seat in the House of Commons.

MacLeod dropped her bid to replace Tim Hudak as leader of the Progressive Conservative party last week, lending her support to frontrunner Christine Elliott.

She announced via a written statement Tuesday that she has no plans, right now, of leaving Queen’s Park.

“After having been re-elected for a fourth time this past June and recently ending a leadership run for the Ontario PC Party, I want the constituents of Nepean – Carleton to know I intend to honour my commitment to complete this four year mandate and help Christine Elliott form a Progressive Conservative government in 2018,” she said in a statement.

It was rumoured MacLeod would try and replace John Baird after he resigned his seat in the House of Commons on Feb. 2.  Baird, 45, held several high-profile positions in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet including the transport and environment files and, most recently, foreign affairs.

MacLeod’s departure from the race positions Elliott as the frontrunner ahead of Patrick Brown and Monte McNaughton.
