WATCH: Baking up a storm in the Okanagan for animals

It’s a fundraiser that has animal lovers trading in their dog leashes for baking supplies.  Called the National Cupcake Day, the event encourages people to bake cupcakes and sell them at their workplaces, schools and family events.

“Put your aprons on, get your flour and butter together and start baking cupcakes,” says Kelowna SPCA branch manager Suzanne Pugh.

The annual event, now in its third year, benefits the SPCA and other animal organizations across Canada.  Last year the event raised almost half a million dollars nationwide.

“Right across the nation last year was just over $450,000,  staggering,” says Pugh.

National Cupcake Day takes place on Monday, February 22 but many are already baking. The idea is to sell the cupcakes to family, friends, co-workers and customers and then donate the proceeds to the SPCA.

The money is earmarked for what the greatest needs such as critical care for injured animals and animal cruelty investigations.  In Kelowna, one of the biggest challenges is the sheer volume of animals coming into the shelter.

“Last year was a fairly challenging year for us and our volunteers and our staff. We actually took in and cared for 250 more animals than the year before so we almost had 1,800 animals come through the doors last year, “ says Pugh.
