Saskatchewan’s free fishing weekend a winter first

REGINA BEACH, Sask. – Families in the province still have Monday to take advantage of lakes chock full of tasty fish. Many others are busy enjoying Saskatchewan’s first free fishing weekend during the winter.

“Should have brought some hot dogs,” said Michael Perrault, in a two-person hut on a frozen Last Mountain Lake Sunday morning.

Several other ice fishers struggled to get any bites, though the day was still young at that point.

“It’s just that thought that you’re going to catch a fish that makes it awesome, makes it intense,” said Perrault.

Between Saturday and Monday, anyone in Saskatchewan, including people who don’t live in the province, can fish without a license.

Sharon Gallenger and Darrell Steele have turned ice fishing into a Valentine’s Day tradition. However, this year bad weather forced them to delay it by a day.

The Regina couple started dating two-and-a-half years ago.

“I bought her her own fishing rod for Valentine’s Day, and I took her out ice fishing and now I don’t have to make excuses to go ice fishing. She’s at the door waiting already,” said Steele.

The two built a steel-lined hut on the lake. Insulation, a stove and lighting are a few of the features inside.

“We’ve got the pans hanging. The coffee pot to make coffee, which uses our own good water, not the lake water,” said Gallenger, giving a tour of the bathroom-sized hut.

She is already planning on upgrades for next winter.

“We could put some beds. You know, spend the night here,” said Gallenger.

“That would be romantic,” she added with a laugh.
