WINNIPEG – A Manitoba MP wants to see a boycott on a controversial movie released Friday night.

50 Shades of Grey hit the big screen this Valentine’s weekend and conservative Joy Smith is calling the film offensive.

“It’s 50 shades of abuse not 50 Shades of Grey,” said Smith, who believes the movie is an advertisement for violence against women.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Smith took to Twitter Saturday saying 50 Shades is about humiliation, degradation and the emotional and physical abuse of women by men, adding the movie glamorizes exploitation.

“To pay for a movie that shows dominance and abuse and has a happy ending, this is not the way that life works,” said Smith.

She wants to affirm the value and dignity of women and send a clear message that sexual violence is never romantic or acceptable.
