North Carolina police say the crime was sparked by a long simmering anger over parking and noise but the victims’ families insist they were hate crimes. Their 46-year old neighbor is charged with their murder.

“We’re just here to remember the great people that they were,” said Israa Elgazzar organizer of the vigil. “They were loved in their Muslim community and their community at large so we’re here to, it’s a celebration of their life.”

The vigil drew a crowd of roughly 50 people who gathered at University Center at the University of Manitoba.
