TORONTO – A major power outage cut electricity to nearly 8,000 Toronto Hydro customers in downtown Toronto Friday, as temperatures dipped below minus 20 degrees Celsius.

The power went out in an area downtown bounded by Eglinton Avenue, Wellesley Street, Spadina Avenue and Yonge Street at approximately 10:30 a.m.. Toronto Hydro officials blamed a supply issue from Hydro One, the provincial hydro authority, as the source of the outage.

Hydro crews were able to restore power to all but 14 of the 8,000 customers by 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Much of the work took place at the Bridgman Transformer Station located at Davenport Road, which is shared by both Toronto Hydro and Hydro One.

A number of businesses, office buildings and tourist attractions like the Royal Ontario Museum and the Art Gallery of Ontario had to close temporarily as a result of the outage.
