Composite sketches released on 1 year anniversary of Bonavista double homicide

CALGARY – Police have released composite sketches of two people they wish to speak with in connection to the murder of a Calgary couple in their Lake Bonavista home one year ago.

Police found the bodies of 59-year-old Don Carlson and 56-year-old Roxanne Carlson in the 12200 block of Lake Erie Road S.E. after receiving a call from the couple’s son about a potential carbon monoxide leak at the home.

During their investigation, CO was ruled out as the cause of death, and the Homicide Unit was called in to investigate.

On Friday, investigators released drawings of two men seen in the area near the Carlson’s home on February 14th and 15th, 2014 who they wish to speak with.

The first man was observed by a witness on Lake Erie Road on Saturday, February 15th, 2014. He is described as being in his 40s with long dirty blond hair and a slim build.

“They were seen in the area, and so we’re hoping that any information they could bring forward – or something they may have seen,” explained Insp. Steve Barlow, who stressed the men are not suspects or persons of interest.

“These two are the only individuals that have popped up during the investigation that we haven’t been able to locate.”

In addition, police are looking for information about a newer silver or grey pickup truck, possibly a Toyota, that was present near the Carlson’s residence prior to their discovery.

Insp. Barlow say the Carlson’s murder has been a difficult investigation.

“We’re looking at two individuals in their home… no ties to any criminal activity, anything like that. It’s been a very long, drawn-out investigation, and it’s been very difficult for members of the Calgary Police Service, as well as for the family members.”

“They’re heartbroken with losing their loved ones, and would love to get closure for this,” added Barlow.

Police say they are being aided in the investigation by a forensic psychologist, and hope it may help them find a new lead.

“On a case like this, we will pull out all the stops, trying to figure out what took place.”

Last year, police announced they had teamed up with an anonymous contributor to offer a $25,000 reward for information directly responsible for the arrest and conviction of the party, or parties, responsible for the murder of Don and Roxanne Carlson.

To be eligible for this reward, anyone with information related to the homicide is asked to contact the Homicide Unit directly at homicidetips@calgarypolice.ca or by phone at (403) 428-8877.

Alternatively, members of the public who wish to remain anonymous can contact Crime Stoppers.

The reward offered is independent of Crime Stoppers; however Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward of up to $2,000 for tips that lead to an arrest, the recovery of stolen property or the seizure of illegal drugs.
