TORONTO – A Toronto truck driver says he is lucky to be alive after a metal rod struck his vehicle and pierced the windshield while traveling on the Don Valley Parkway early Friday morning.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the DVP between Eglinton Avenue and Don Mills Road.

“All I saw was ‘boom’, like a bomb,” driver Benjamin Kojo told Global News. “When I found out, they said a big rod in my truck in front of my windshield going into my roof.”

Kojo said the piece of metal fell off a garbage truck and that he initially tried to follow the vehicle before pulling over to call police.

“The guy was going that fast, the thing fly that fast. I would have been dead right now,” he said.

“I can’t imagine what’s going [sic] to be like if this thing gone through the windscreen and get through me. Oh, I’d be dead right now.”

There’s no immediate word from police if any charges will be laid against the garbage truck driver.
