Another anti-drug rally

BROCKET- The battle to keep illegal drugs out of First Nations is once again front and centre, with a handful of tribes rallying in Brocket.

“We need to come together as a community!” yelled a supporter through a megaphone.

Recent deaths due to Oxy 80’s and prescription drugs in the Blood Tribe have residents taking action.  Their main objective is to make young people aware of the many dangers of drugs.

“There’s a new drug in our community. We’re not pointing any fingers, we’re only bringing awareness to the community,” said Doug Ironshirt.  “We are aware of what Oxy has done to our neighboring tribe.”

Though Oxycodone is at the forefront of the rally, many in Brocket are using the drug as a platform to advocate against other drugs as well.

“We’re not just singling out just one thing. it’s alcohol, drugs, and also prescription drugs.”

Brockett is one of many communities rallying together and remembering those who have died, while also raising awareness for others to avoid the same fate.  Brocket resident Marion Strikes With A Gun had the chance to pass down his knowledge at the rally.

“As we were walking one girl asked me. what is Oxycodone?” said Strikes With A Gun.  “I told her what it is. So there you go, right there, the seed is planted. Now they can make a choice.”

In at least some way, many at the rally have been personally affected by drugs.  Lydia Mistakenchiem has a son battling drug addiction, and has one fear above all else.

“To get the phone call that my son doesn’t wake up from the stuff he’s taking.”
