KELOWNA – The screech of a smoke detector may have saved the life of a Kelowna man Wednesday night.

He was sleeping in his unit of a Rutland neighbourhood six-plex when the fire was reported at about 9:30.

About two dozen firefighters responded, finding flames and smoke coming out of a second floor window upon arrival.

They quickly extinguished the fire which did not extend to other units.

The fire department says the resident was awakened by the smoke detector and he got outside without being injured.

Smoke displaced several residents from other units in the building. They were put up in a hotel by Emergency Social Services.
