EDMONTON — The construction of Rogers Place achieved a significant milestone overnight Tuesday. The first steel beams forming the base of the Winter Garden pedway are now pieced together.
The beams connect the main arena complex to what’s being call the Winter Garden Landing on the south side of 104 Avenue. The Winter Garden is being erected through weekday overnight periods, as the work requires the closure of the avenue, from 101 to 103 Streets, to facilitate the work.

During the arena debate, the Winter Garden Pedway proved to be a source of some contention. Several councillors at the time were concerned about the cost it would add to the overall project. The Katz Group argued the pedway was needed as a means to get thousands of people across 104 Avenue. The pedway is designed to be the main entrance to Rogers Place. The base is a central plaza of the the Arena District.
According to city documents, the Winter Garden comes with a price tag of $56.5 million. A portion, $25 million, will be paid through the Community Revitalization Levy (CRL). The Katz Group, through its Edmonton Arena Corporation (EAC), will pay $25 million through the course of its 35 year lease agreement. EAC has also provided $6.5 million in cash for the pedway.
Work on the pedway will continue through June 2015. The arena is scheduled to open by the fall of 2016.
