MLA’s speak out against serial killer Allan Legere’s move to a new facility

FREDERICTON – There was some tense moments in the New Brunswick legislature Wednesday as a topic no one likes to discuss arose.

Tory MLA Bruce Northrup said serial killer Allan Legere had reportedly been moved to a regular maximum security facility in Edmonton from a special holding unit in a maximum prison in Quebec.

It’s been 25 years since Legere caused something known to those on the Miramichi as the “reign of terror.”

He killed one person and was convicted, but escaped during a medical appointment in Moncton. He went on to kill four more people.

MLA’s on both sides are asking the federal government to reconsider the move.

“I personally lived through this back in the day when the act of terror took place because of this individual,” said Miramichi-Bay du Vin MLA Bill Fraser. “My family had to deal with this, my neighbours, my friends.

“The people of Miramichi are concerned, they want to see action taken by the federal government and that was why as soon as I learned of the situation I wrote a letter to Minister Blaney immediately.”

Miramichi’s mayor and council have also written a letter to federal Minister of Public Safety, Steven Blaney.

Fraser said Miramichi’s Member of Parliament Tilly O’Neill-Gordon has been informed of the community’s fears.

“They’re worried that he may escape again,” said Tory MLA Bruce Northrup. “When he was put away to a federal prison he was supposed to be put away for life.”
