Truck causes damage to northeast pedestrian bridge

CALGARY – Significant damage was done to a pedestrian bridge in the city’s northeast on Wednesday after it was hit by a large truck.

Police say the truck, which was transporting a caterpillar, was travelling eastbound on 16th Avenue N.E. when it struck the bottom of the pedestrian bridge as it approached 19th Street N.E., just before 11 a.m.

The incident left chucks of concrete on the road below, and a sign dangling.

Police say the same vehicle continued on, also striking an overpass at 26th Street N.E.

City engineers are being called in to check on the structural integrity of the bridges.
