Unusual ways Canadians find love: read the stories and share your own

WATCH ABOVE: Global’s Allison Vuchnich and Tania Kohut discuss some of the most unusual love stories that were submitted to Global News by Canadians.

TORONTO — Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It’s a day of love, heart-shaped chocolates and an abundance of teddy bears gifted to adults.

People find love in all different ways (and in all different places). One U.S. couple met playing Halo, a popular online video game. They finally came face-to-face in 2012, in a meeting that was captured on camera and became a viral video.

A man injured in the Boston Marathon bombing met a nurse during his recovery who he married in 2014.

And one Canadian couple met on a Greyhound bus, and 11 years later, got married at the Toronto bus terminal.

In honour of Valentine’s Day, Global News asked you to tell us your story of how you met that special someone. Below are some of those responses (some posts have been edited for length and clarity).

You can also tell us your story by using the form at the bottom of this post.

Catherine Williston

I was going out on a date and got stood up! It was Monday, Oct. 25, 1993. I was meeting my date at a sports bar in Burlington, Ontario. I was a bit early and decided to play pool while I waited for my date.

A very good looking guy came up and asked if he could play a game of pool with me. I said yes. We closed the bar that night. He asked me out for the next night and I said yes.  I knew that very first night we met that I was going to marry him.  On our 3rd date he finally kissed me and asked for my telephone number.

We moved in together in April 1994 and got married on May 8, 1998 in Antigua. This year will be our 17th wedding anniversary. If you ask him, he will tell you that it was love at first sight and that we were destined to be together.

I met my husband at a funeral.

A dear friend and co-worker’s mother-in-law passed way.  I went to the funeral to support my friend.  After the funeral service, there was a luncheon.  My friend knew I wouldn’t likely know anyone as most of those in attendance were Polish friends and relatives.  To make matters more complicated, the conversations were in Polish and I neither spoke or understood the language.

My friend told me she was going to seat me beside someone who would converse with me in English.  That person, my personal translator, became my husband. We have been married 18 years now and we still chuckle over this story and thank my friend’s mother-in-law for bringing us together.

I was working at a skydive drop zone packing student parachutes to pay for my addiction to jumping out of airplanes. She was a student skydiver who relied on my pack jobs to save her life, while she was out saving other people’s lives as a paramedic.

Turns out it was her that saved my life by becoming my soul mate! Going through the unimaginable pain of losing our first child would truly have been the end of me if it wasn’t for her. Twelve years later I love you now more than ever Kara Anderson!

It was 2005 and my Dad needed to be placed in a long-term care facility. Mom and I would visit him everyday. Little did I know a worker befriended my mom to see if I was single. He must have asked me out for a good six months! Finally Feb. 9, 2008, I said YES. We have been together ever since and were married May 25, 2013. It has been seven years of butterflies and almost two years of marriage.

For us every day is Valentine’s Day!!!

People always say that your true love will never walk into your house. Well, mine did, 29 years ago. My husband was visiting neighbours and he was told that I had a phone, [so he] came knocking on my door, asked to use my phone, and never left since.

We have be married 25 years this coming summer. And our love for each other grows stronger as we age.

Cheryl & Matthew Fields

I was 21 and lived at home with my parents, and my mom had called the cable company. When they walked in, my future hubby was standing there and I didn’t even know it yet.

I remember my father saying, “now Cheryl, leave the boys alone to do their work.”

I went down and we chatted while he did his job. Then once he was done he left and that was it. I went downstairs to check out my TV and noticed he had left his drill on my bed, so I ran upstairs. We talked for a bit longer, then he asked me out that night to play pool. That was May 2000 (I still have the work order.) Ever since, we have been inseparable.

After about the first week of dating we were walking hand-in-hand and a friend we both knew (but didn’t know the other knew) came up in awe and said “Cheryl, Matthew what are you guys doing together, how did you meet? Cheryl this is the guy I have been trying to set you up on the blind date with and Matthew this is the girl.”

That’s when we knew we would be together forever. It has been 15 years now. We are married with four children.

Angela and Roger Jay

When I was 18 years old I worked at our local grocery store, in the bakery department.  A very handsome, lovely, happy young man would come and do his grocery shopping every Monday and Wednesday evenings, my shifts.  He would nervously approach me and ask to buy all of my dinner rolls, whether I had a dozen or eight dozen left in the case. Weeks went by and finally this gorgeous man got up enough nerve to ask me over to his place for dinner. I gladly accepted!

The big dinner date came and when I went to get some ice cubes out of his freezer. I was overwhelmed to see that his freezer was full of dinner rolls. There were no ice cubes, because there wasn’t any room! His response, “I had to ask you out. I had no more room for any more dinner buns.”

Twenty-seven years later, we still laugh at our love story. Guess it is true, a way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! Or maybe it was my sexy white apron I had to wear while working at the bakery.

Michelle Dickie

We met in the summer of 2008 volunteering for an international peace education NGO, in Israel. Both being responsible adults in charge of teenagers, we never admitted to liking each other until exactly two minutes before the cab to take me and my 14-year-olds to the airport and back to Canada arrived. (I figured, why not tell him?  It’s not like I’ll ever see him again!)

We stayed in touch via emails, then phone and Skype calls and had our first date when he came to visit for five days. He moved to Canada two months later and we were married three weeks after that — the wedding preparations were 48 hours from the “let’s get married” to the “I do’s.”

We just celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary last month and now have a wonderful 18-month-old daughter. We still volunteer and travel all over the world together.

I met my husband in August 1970. We were introduced to each other by my first cousin. When he walked in the front door, I knew right away that he wasn’t going to be for me, but I stayed for the evening and we talked. He drove me home and I figured that was it.

When I came home my late mum asked who that was. I told her some jerk that Ben wanted me to meet and I really don’t care if I ever see him again. In typical mum fashion, she said “If he calls, go out with him, after all you’re not going to marry him”.

Famous last words.

On April 4th, 2015 my dear Paul and I will celebrate 44 years of marriage. So in this instance, it was mother who knew best.

By the way, he had to ask me twice to marry him. First time, I thought he was joking.
