Animal rescuers save dog’s life, now need help themselves

EDMONTON — An 18-month-old pup, who was shot on a rural property near Morinville, has a new lease on life thanks to the Infinite WOOFS Animal Rescue Society.

“The owners couldn’t afford to pay for the surgery to fix him all up so we took him in,” explained April Oakes, adding he would otherwise have been euthanized.

Oakes said Dakota, a Newfoundland-cross, had “a massive wound” from the gunshot and required two surgeries, which he’s spent the past two weeks recovering from.

As soon as he’s fully healed, he’ll make a four-hour trip to his new home in Grande Prairie. There, Dakota will be the official pet at a senior’s home, where he’ll have more than 100 new owners to spoil him with love and affection — a win/win combination, according to Oakes.

“To have animals in nursing homes and seniors homes it has shown to increase their happiness, just like it does for us,” she said.

“All that he wants is love and kisses and pets.  He [will] be fantastic there…He’s going to be nurtured, he’s going to be loved.”

Now, all that’s left to take care of is the $5,000 vet bill. The not-for-profit hopes that’s where community support will come in.

“Some of the animals we take in, we don’t necessarily have all the funding to rescue them. We still rescue them because we’re in it for the animals, and then we worry about all the donations after.”
