Police in east China’s Shandong Province caught a drunk driver who tried to escape after attempting to drive his car onto a sidewalk on Feb. 2 afternoon.

Surveillance tape showed at about 15:00 a grey car did not turn at a crossing but attempted to drive directly onto the sidewalk and nearly knocked into a biker in the province’s Linyi City.

Two traffic policemen hurried to the site and wanted to find what happened. However, the driver did not stop but backed his car and tried to escape.

“I thought there must be something wrong with the driver. We hurried to the site. We open the door, only to find the driver drunk. But he backed his car and tried to escape,” said Tang Qing, deputy team leader of No.1 Brigade, Linyi traffic police detachment.

A policeman was quick enough to get in and stopped the driver after he continued for several meters.

“At that time, our team member got into the car. The driver said to him ‘Buddy, I take you to knock onto the wall.’ We felt surprised by his words. We know maybe because he knocked onto the roadside twice and got some illusion,” Tang added.

The man had a blood-alcohol level of 190 milligrams per 100 milliliters and was identified as drunk driving.

China’s Road Traffic Safety Law stipulates that drivers who have at least 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood in their body are considered drunk.

According to the law, drivers found guilty of drunk driving will have their licenses revoked and will have to wait five years to apply for a new one.
