Discount disappointment as Calgary Target stores begin liquidation

CALGARY – Bargain hunters braved Calgary’s brisk February weather to line up outside a southeast Target location on Thursday as the American retailer began liquidating its merchandise.

Target Canada received court approval to begin liquidating its stock on Wednesday, as they start closing 133 stores across the country.

A spokeswoman for the company said shoppers could find items reduced by as much as 30 per cent from their regular sales price.

However, some shoppers leaving the Forest Lawn location told Global News the discounts in the store weren’t as deep as they had been hoping for.

“I expected at least 30 per cent, but their shelves are marked, a lot of them, at ten per cent,” complained one man.

“Something that would have cost me $24 maybe cost me $22. Only ten per cent off,” said another woman. “Not impressed at all.”

“I think it’s not that great,” echoed another disappointed shopper. “It’s from five to 30 per cent. Supposedly it’s like total liquidation, but the deals aren’t that great.

Disappointment over the lack of liquidation discounts has been mounting all over Canada, with people making similar complaints from Toronto to Vancouver.

Elsewhere in Calgary, shoppers outside the Sunridge Target location complained lines inside the store were too long.

“There’s too many people to actually look at the deals,” said one exasperated woman as she walked to her car. “There’s just so much going on.”

Others expressed disappointment that Calgary’s Target locations were closing.

“There’s not another store like this is the city,” expressed one bundled-up shopper. “Everybody complained about the prices, you know what? They’ve obviously never been to Target in the United States, to actually see how great the store was.”

In addition to its remaining inventory, Target’s shelving, fixtures and equipment will also be sold.
