B.C. woman gives birth to twins in truck on the way to Kamloops hospital

WATCH: A new mother from Kamloops, B.C. is sharing the story of how she delivered her twins in her husband’s Dodge truck. The new mom, the babies and the truck are all doing fine. Mike Drolet has the story.

Anyone who lives in B.C.’s interior knows that sometimes you just have to get things done yourself. Nika Guilbault knows that better than anyone.

About a week ago, Guilbault, pregnant with twins, went into labour in her Sorrento home and she and her husband got into their truck to make the hour-long drive to the maternity ward at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

But her daughter wasn’t willing to wait that long. Nika gave birth to a baby girl in the front of their Dodge truck as they raced down the highway.

“I delivered her and I just grabbed her right away and gave her two little breaths of air and got her going,” she says.

“She opened her eyes right away and her arms went up and I tucked her into my shirt. We just kept continuing on because we definitely wanted to make sure that we got ready for the second one.”

With their midwife on the phone, the family made it to the hospital just in time for their son to make an appearance.

“Just as we pulled up the road to the hospital, my water broke and he was on his way and he was coming feet first,” she said.

Hunter’s umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, but with the help of nurses he was delivered safely in the front of the truck, which was parked in the hospital’s parking lot.

Nevada Sienna and Hunter Dodge, nicknamed the Dodge Twins, were born six weeks premature but are doing well and should be able to go home in a few weeks.
