It’s official: winter is half over

WINNIPEG — It’s cold this week but remember it could always be worse.

So far this winter we have had four days colder than -20 degrees. By this time last winter we had endured 13 days.

As of Wednesday morning, we have officially passed the halfway point of winter.

It’s an important milestone in Manitoba especially considering what we endured last year, one of the worst winters on record.

Snowfall is also below normal. Environment Canada says since the beginning of December 28.2 cm of snow has fallen. Winnipeg would typically see 46.7 in that span.

There were also 96 reported cases of frozen water pipes by this time last winter. The city says there have only been 12 cases this time around.

But it’s not all good news.

The roller coaster temperatures are creating slick roads and sidewalks as well as potholes.

They have also made for a little more work for Festival du Voyageur.

“With the thawing and rain one of the sculptures had been worked and done and the guys had to go back and rework it because it was damaged,” said Ginette Lavack Walters, the executive director.

She says last year the issue was too much snow in Voyageur Park. This winter the crew had to go a little farther to find snow.

Lavack Walters says the recent cold weather couldn’t have come at a better time.

Festival kicks off February 13.
