Albertan killed in highway crash near Grande Prairie

File / Global News

EDMONTON – A man was killed in a crash in northwestern Alberta Monday afternoon.

RCMP said two semi trucks collided on Highway 40, just south of the Wapiti River Bridge. The driver of one of the semi trucks, a 48-year-old man from Sexsmith, died on scene.

A 35-year-old female passenger from the same truck and the driver of the other truck were airlifted by STARS hospital. Their injuries are unknown.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but it’s not believed that drugs or alcohol were factors.

The identity of the man who died hasn’t been released.

The Grande Prairie RCMP detachment says they’ve responded to 22 collisions on Highway 40 since the New Year. Monday’s crash is the second fatal crash on the highway in less than one month.

The RCMP is reminding motorists to drive with caution during the winter months.

“Weather conditions are unpredictable and this can make driving on Highway 40 a greater challenge.  Motorists need to slow down and drive to the conditions of the road, not to the posted speed limit.”
