WINNIPEG — One of the people vying to become Manitoba premier is accusing the Opposition Tories of planning a — quote — “reign of terror” over workers.

Theresa Oswald, who is running to unseat Premier Greg Selinger as leader of the New Democrats, says the Tories have a track record of voting against worker rights and would dismantle labour legislation.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Oswald has already used strong language against the Tories, and launched her leadership campaign by accusing them of being anti-women and anti-gay.

Opposition Leader Brian Pallister has said Oswald is trying to deflect attention from the government’ record.

Oswald made the comments while promising to change a labour law if she wins the March 8 party leadership vote.

She says she would allow unions or management to apply for arbitration 45 days after the start of a strike or lockout — down from 60 days.

Oswald says she would also be open to considering a ban on replacement workers and a lower threshold for union certification — measures that were promised in the last leadership race by runner-up Steve Ashton.

Ashton is running again this time.
