Calgary police respond to dozens of crashes as snow blankets city roads

WATCH ABOVE: Love it or hate it, winter is officially back this weekend. After being hit with a heat wave for the last few weeks, the seasonal snow is back on the streets and the drop in temperature is proving to be difficult for some. Sarah Offin reports.

CALGARY- Blowing snow and ice made for a treacherous commute on Calgary roads Saturday.

Since 4 p.m on Friday police have responded to several dozen crashes on city streets, including six that resulted in injuries.

Just after 2:45 a.m. officers were called to a crash on Bow Bottom Trail and Diamond Drive SE.

They say a vehicle traveling southbound on Bow Bottom Trail collided with a retaining wall.

Crews arrived at the scene to find a man in his early 20s was unconscious. He was transported in serious, potentially life-threatening condition with possible internal injuries.

EMS is reminding drivers to leave sufficient distance between your car and other vehicles and to ensure that your vehicle is properly outfitted for winter driving.

That means driving to the conditions and keeping a first-aid and winter survival kit on hand to use in emergencies.

They also suggest using winter tires and packing a collapsible shovel, ice scraper and extra footwear in your vehicle.

A Spokesperson for EMS says despite the winter conditions, ambulances have not had any trouble accessing communities.
